Siberian Husky Secrets - For Siberian Husky Owners Or For Those Who Want One!

Nikki Cowell

My 2 year old male doesn't eat a lot, even though he acts like he has 500 pounds of energy.

I was recently added to a family that consists of two other dogs and of course my husband. He had an exceptionally sweet husky, but I soon noticed that he barely eats at all. Our other two children, a pit-bull and a golden retriever mix, eat quite a deal more than our husky. He never slows down, and seems to be healthy. We feed him regularly, but often times will not finish his bowl for about two days. He gets about four- five cups of dog food when he is fed. Is this normal?

Hi Nikki,

i just recently joined, and i have three huskies one is two and 3 month and the other two is 7 and a half months old.
Huskies don't eat alot of food and they do go through stages where they will eat alot and times where they will leave alot of food in their bowls and only go back to eat it when they feel peckish.
Huskies are also like cats in some ways where they will only listen to you if they feel it will benifit them in a way - very intelligent dogs, as well as if they feel that you are not doing your best to feed them great food they wil not eat it. they feel that you can give them better food so they will not eat it some times.
my suggestion is that if you are worried about your husky not eating change their food a bit maybe add gravy to the food or change the flavours, thats what i do with mine and i get clean bowls every time.

My Indy doesn't eat very much either. She is 2.5 years. I think the heat makes her want to eat even less. It's a breed trait. They are like economy cars. You get a lot of milage out of them from very little fuel!

It has to do with many factors, yes the heat is one of them but also the ammount of activity and energy they burn. If it is a pure bread husky then it's general meals are alot less of any other breed in that size. They where bread with the intention of "economy". My three get fed once a day in moderate proportions and that is more than enough. We sometimes see left over pellets at the next meal. If the dogs start to drastically lose weight consult a vet, otherwise you have nothing to worry about.

Depending on the size of the cup (in ml) four to five cups could be over feeding him. Remember they are bread to be workers and unless they are dead tired at feeding times they will only eat what is needed to keep them going. They are not like other breeds that will over eat just cos there is food on the plate.

The Siberian Husky was originally bred to perform on a minimal amount of food, the Siberian requires less subsistence per pound than other breeds their size. Some will actually monitor their own intake and will pass up on eating a meal here and there...so it's not surprising that your Sibe may not eat quite like the pitty mix or the retriever mix.
